The Minister for Manpower, Mr Tan Chuan Jin, has announced on 24 April 2014 that the Singapore Ministry of Manpower is proposing to set up a small claims tribunal to resolve salary and other employment-related disputes.
This tribunal will hear salary and employment disputes for all workers efficiently and affordably. It means that even workers who are covered under the scope of the Employment Act can have access to this new avenue of recourse. Currently, only workers covered by the Employment Act can seek the Ministry of Manpower’s help with salary disputes. This would exclude domestic workers and employees holding a managerial or executive position with a monthly salary of more than S$4,500 all of whom are not covered by the Employment Act.
This is good news for employees as it gives them an additional avenue of recourse besides the Singapore Courts (which many employees may regard as an expensive or unaffordable route).
